Abstract

The objective of this research was to describe the problems faced by the third grade students of SMP Pertiwi 2 Padang in writing procedural recount text. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the third grade students of SMP Pertiwi 2 Padang in academic year 2015/2016 who have learned the recount text in second grade. The total member of the population was 160 students. They were distributed into five classes: IX 1, IX 2, IX 3, IX 4, and IX 5. To take the sample, the research used cluster random sampling technique. The researcher took one class. The researcher took 20% or 32 students. The data of this research was the students’ problems in writing procedural recount text. To gather the data, the researcher used writing test. The researcher focused on generic structure and language features of procedural recount text. For generic structure, it focused on orientation, events and reorientation. For language features, it focused on the use of simple past tense and chronological connection. In analyzing data, the researcher checked the students’ problems by using table checklist that indicate the students’ problems on each aspect in writing procedural recount text. And then, the researcher counted the percentage of students who had problems and who had no problems. The result of analyzing the data showed that the third grade students of SMP Pertiwi 2 Padang had problems in writing procedural recount text. It was proved by the fact that there were 19 students (59%) from 32 students had problems and 13 students (41%) had no problems in writing procedural recount text (See appendix 8). Specifically, there were 17 students (53%) had problems in writing orientation of procedural recount text, 19 students (59%) had problems in writing events of procedural recount text, 13 students (41%) had problems in writing reorientation of procedural recount text, 27 students (84%) had problems in using simple past tense and 19 students (59%) had problems in using chronological connection in writing procedural recount text. Learning from the result, it can be concluded that the students had problems in writing procedural recount text. Based on the result, the researcher suggest to the students to learn more about procedural recount text and also for the teacher is suggested to give more explanation and exercise about procedural recount text.
