Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the second year students’ writing ability in using quantifier at Bung Hatta University.The population of this research was the second year students at Bung Hatta University. The total number of population of this research was 49 students and the number of sample was 25 students. They were distributed into two classes, class A 25 consisted of students and class B consisted of 24 students. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique and class A had been chosen to be the sampe of this reseaarch.The instrument of this research was writing test. To know the reliability of the test, the researcher used inter-rater technique. The test was reliable because the value of r- calculated was .99. Based on the result of analyzing data, it was found that 84% of students got moderate ability in using quantifiers. It was supported by the fact that 21 of 25 students (84%) got moderate ability. The second year students’ writing ability in using quantifier for countable noun at Bung Hatta University was moderate. It was supported by the fact that 20 of 25 students (80%) got moderate ability. The second year students’ writing ability in using quantifier for uncountable noun at Bung Hatta University was moderate. It was supported by the fact that 11 of 25 students (44%) got moderate ability. Referring to the findings of this study, the researcher concluded that the second year students’ writing ability at Bung Hatta University in using quantifiers was moderate.The researcher suggests the lecturer is expected to review the material given and they should give more exercises which focuse to write simple sentence in using quantifier. To improve the students’ writing ability in using quantifiers, the researcher suggests the students to do more practices in writing by using quantifier and they should use components of writing that included idea, grammar, vocabulary and mechanic in write sentence
