Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the kinds of grammatical errors made by the second year students of science department at SMAN 8 Padang in writing procedure text. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was the second year students of science department at SMAN 8 Padang in academic year 2015/2016. The population was 127 students; they were separated into four classes; class IPA 1, class IPA 2, class IPA 3 and class IPA 4. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to get the representative sample. The researcher took class IPA 1 as the sample and the total number of sample members was 31 students. The instrument used to get the data was writing test in the form of writing procedure text. The researcher found the reliability of the test by using inter-rater technique. It was found that the coefficient correlation was very high (0.99). It means that the result of the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity. The result of the data analysis showed that students made grammatical errors in writing procedure text. It was proved that 115 total number of grammatical errors. They were 79 errors (254,81%) in omission, 12 errors (38,96%) in addition, and 24 errors (64,49%) in misformation. 16 errors (51,61%) made by students in omission of article, 5 errors (16,12%) in omission of preposition, 24 errors (77,41%) in omission of plural form, 20 errors (64,51%) in using omission of pronoun, 14 errors (45,16%) in omission of be (tobe), 1 error (3,22%) made grammatical errors in addition of article, 1 errors (3,22%)in addition of preposition, 10 errors (32,25%) in addition of suffix –ed on irregular verb, 6 errors (19,35%) in misformation of article, 2 errors (6,45%) in misformation of preposition, 12 errors (16,12%) in misformation of verb form, 5 errors (16,12%) in misformation of pronoun. Finally, by having known the grammatical errors made by the students in writing test in the form of writing text, the students are expected to study much harder in writing in the future. Besides, the researcher also gives suggestion to the teachers to pay more attention to the students’ grammatical errors in writing activity, especially in using article, preposition, pronoun, verb form, be (tobe) and suffix –ed irregular verb. Furthermore, the researcher suggests to the other researchers to find out other forms of grammatical errors made by the students in writing.
