Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the problem faced by second grade students in comprehending a personal lettter at SMP Kartika 1-6 Padang. The objective of this research was to know the problem of the eight grade students’ of SMP Kartika 1-6 Padang in comprehending personal letter. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the eight grade students’ SMP Kartika 1-6 Padang. The total number of the population was 192 students. They were distributed into six classes, class VIII.1, VIII.2, VIII.3, VIII.4, VIII.5, VIII.6. The researcher used cluster random sampling to select the sample, and class VIII.1 had been chosen to be the sample of this research.The data were gathered by reading test in the form of multiple choice, given to the students. The researcher limited her research in comprehending heading, greeting and body of message of personal letter. The result of analysis showed that the students had problems in comprehending a personal letter. It was proved that 80% students had problems. In detail, the students had problems in comprehending heading of personal letter. It was proved that 63% students had problems. The students had problems in comprehending greeting of personal letter. It was proved that 66% students had problems. And the students had problems in comprehending body in personal letter. It was proved that 63% students had problems Based on the result above, the teachers were suggested to give more attention and exercises in comprehending personal letter, since personal letter is usually forward in daily life.
