Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the third year students’ ability in identifying adverbs on ‘The Sherlock Holmes’ novel. This research was limited to four kinds of adverbs; adverbs of manner, adverbs of place, adverbs of time, and adverbs of degree. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The population of this research was the third year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University Academic Year 2013/2014. The number of population members was 56 students. There were 28 students in class A and 28 students in class B. The researcher used cluster random sampling to select the sample; class A (28 students) was as the class for try-out test, and class B (28 students) was as the class for real test. To make test became reliable, the researcher used split-half method. The result of the test was reliable. It was supported by the fact that the result of coefficient correlation was .71 (see Appendix 7). It was categorized as high correlation. Then, the test was valid in term of content validity because it had covered all materials which students had learnt. Generally, the result of analyzing the data showed that the ability of the third year students in identifying adverbs on ‘The Sherlock Holmes’ novel was moderate. It could be seen that 22 students (78.57%) had moderate ability (see Appendix11). Specifically, Twenty students (71.43%) had moderate ability in identifying adverbs of manner on ‘The Sherlock Holmes’ novel (see Appendix 12). Seventeen students (60.71%) had moderate ability in identifying adverbs of place on ‘The Sherlock Holmes’ novel (see Appendix 13). Nineteen students (67.86%) had moderate ability in identifying adverbs of time on ‘The Sherlock Holmes’ novel (see Appendix14). Thirteen students (46.43%) had high ability in identifying adverbs of degree on ‘The Sherlock Holmes’ novel (see Appendix 15). By having known that the students’ ability in identifying adverbs on ‘The Sherlock Holmes’ novel was moderate, the researcher gives suggestions to lecturers, the students and further researchers. The lecturers are suggested to enrich the students’ exercise in identifying adverbs especially about adverbs of degree in the text to improve the students’ ability in identifying adverbs in the text. The students are suggested to do more practices about the use of adverbs in the text especially about adverbs of degree in the text. Further researchers are suggested to find out the problems faced by the students in identifying adverbs in the text.
