Abstract
This research was aimed to describe the ability of second year students of Madrasah Aliyah Taman Raya Balingka in writing past and past continuous simple sentence. The design of this research was descriptive. The total number of the population was 39 students. They were distributed into two classes. The writer used cluster random sampling in taking the sample. The writer took class XI.I and there were 20 students as the sample. In collecting the data, the writer used writing test. The result of the test showed that the reliability of the test was .97. It means that, the test was reliable. Analyzing the data was based on the result of writing test in the form of writing simple sentence test. The writer presented the raw score in table, and then calculated the students’ score, classified the students who got high, moderate, or low ability. Finally, she counted the percentage of students according to their ability. The result of analysis showed that the students’ ability in writing simple sentence using past and past continuous tense was moderate ability. It was proved that 55% students had moderate ability. In detail, there were 17 students (85%) who got moderate ability in writing affirmative sentences in past tense, 14 students (70%) who got moderate ability in writing affirmative sentences in past continuous tense, 12 students (60%) who got moderate ability in writing negative sentences in past tense, 13 students (65%) who got moderate ability in writing negative sentences in past continuous tense, 13 students (65%) who got moderate ability in writing interrogative (yes/ no question) sentences in past tense and 13 students (65%) who got moderate ability in writing interrogative (yes/ no question) sentences in past continuous tense. Based on the result above, a simple conclusion could be drawn that the students’ ability in writing past and past continuous simple sentence was moderate. Since the result was moderate, the teacher should give students more knowledge, explanation, and exercises in order to help them improve their ability in writing past and past continuous tense sentences. The students should posses enough knowledge and do more exercises to write past tense and past continuous tense sentences.
