Abstract

This study aimed to find out the ability of the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in understanding future perfect tense. This research was limited to the students’ ability to write positive, negative and yes/no questions form of future perfect tense. The population of this reseach was the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University.The design of the research was descriptive. The members of the population was 53 students. The reseacher took 29 students (class A) as the sample. In selecting sample, the reseacher used cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used to get the data was grammar test in the form of writing sentences. The researcher found the reliability of the test by using inter-rater method. It was found that the coefficient correlation was very high (.90). It means that the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in terms of content validity. The result of data analysis revealed that the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had moderate ability in understanding future perfect tense. It was indicated by the fact that 21 students (72.41%) had moderate ability in understanding future perfect tense. Specifically, the students ability to write positive form sentences in future perfect tense was moderate. It was indicated by the fact that 23 students (79.31%) had moderate ability. The students abilty to write negative form sentences in future perfect tense was moderate. It was indicated by the fact that 20 students (68.70%) had moderate ability. The students ability to write yes/no questions sentences in future perfect tense was moderate. It was indicated by the fact that 24 students (82.76%) had moderate ability. By having known that the students’ ability in understanding future perfect tense was moderate, the researcher gives suggestions to the lecturers, the students and the further researcher. The lecturers are suggested to give more explanation and exercises about future perfect tense. The students are suggested to study hard and learn more about future perfect tense, especially about positive form, negative form and yes/no questions of future perfect tense. Further researchers are expected to find and analyze the factors which influence the students’ ability in understanding future perfect tense.
