Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the fourth year students’ grammatical errors in writing an argumentative essay at English Department of Bung Hatta University.Descriptive method was used as the design of this research.The number of population members was 113 students.The writer used cluster random sampling to select the sample and the total number of sample members was 35 students.The instrument used to get the data was writing test.The students were asked to write an argumentative essay based on the topics provided.It was found that the reliability index of the test was 0.90.Then,the test was valid in term of content validity(see Appendix 5). The result of this research showed that in general ,the fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University had grammatical errors in writing an argumentative essay by the fact that 53,14 % of sample members who made errors. It was proved by the findings that 18 students (51,2%) made errors and 17 students (48,58%) made no errors in using Subject_verb agreement, 14 students (40,00%) made errors and 21 students (60,00%) made no errors in using verb tense, 14 students (40,00%) made errors and 21 students (60,00%) made no errors in using verb form, 26 students (74,29%) made errors and 9 students (25,71%) made no errors in using singular/plural noun ending, 21 students (60,00%) made errors and 14 students (40,00%) made no errors in using word form ( see Appendix 8 ) . Based on the result of this research, the writer concluded that the fourth year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University made grammatical errors in writing an argumentative essay. Dealing with the conclusions, the writer suggests to the lecturers to pay attention and minimize the students’ errors by using creative ways.The writer also suggests to the students to improve their ability in learning grammar and minimize their grammatical errors in the future, especially in writing an argumentative essay.For the next researcher, the writer suggests to find out and analyze the factors that influence students’ grammatical errors in writing an argumentative essay.
