Abstract

Racial discrimination has become a people’s habit. This usually occurs in the black race where they are in a lower position than the white race. This study aims to analyze cases of racial discrimination and struggle against racial discrimination that are described in We Cast A Shadow by Maurice Carlos Ruffin. The novel depicts people’s life in America, where there is often very strong racial discrimination and the story of a father’s struggle to protect his son and struggle against racial discrimination. In this study the writer used the method of interpretation and close reading to understand the novel. The results of this study indicate that racial discrimination that occurs is direct discrimination and indirect discrimination. The writer also found that the result of this study indicate the struggle against racial discrimination experienced by the characters in the form of economic, politic, education, and motivation struggles. Form this efforts they believe that although there is racial discrimination this cannot be eliminated, at least they can improve their quality of life and be respected by other races. If this is done, of course the unpleasant treatment will disappear and racial discrimination in American society will automatically decrease. Keywords: discrimination, racial discrimination, struggle against racial discrimination.
