Abstract

This research aims to identify the dominant form and reflection of power from the classification of illocutionary speech acts expressed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 8 transcripts of press conference speeches about covid-19. This research was analyzed by discourse analysis with classification using speech act theory by Searle to find the reflection of power based on Foucault's theory. This research used a method in the form of a mixed-method. Data was collected by library research from the Japanese government website and, according to Creswell, analyzed using the Sequential-Transformative strategy. Thus, the data is presented in tables and graphs (quantitative) and analyzed descriptively (qualitatively). This research resulted in findings (n=395) in the form of performative verbs. The Assertive (n=127), that are 5 data of describing (4%), 84 data of informing (66%), 15 data of claiming (12%), and 23 data of predicting ( 18%). The Directive (n=68), that are 53 data of requesting (78%), 2 data of inviting (3%), 13 data of suggesting (19%). The Commissive (n=123), that are 111 data of promising (90%) and 12 data of intending (10%). The Expressive (n=52), that are 3 data of condolences (6%), 1 data of sympathizing (2%), 28 data of thanking (54%), 2 data of fear (4%), 3 data of worried (6%), 6 data of apologizing (12%), 9 data of respect (15% ), and 1 data of congratulations (2%). The Declarative (n=25), that are 19 data of establishing (76%) and 6 data of revoking (24%). In addition, the power that Abe Shinzou shows in his speech often uses honorific language (keigo) by involving a regime of truth and knowledge about various changes in activities due to covid-19 and then the resistance of power.
