Abstract

This research is analyzed by the researcher in this study aims to determine the types of translation shift and focuses more on unit shifts and class shifts. This focuses on the translation provided in the subtitle movie as well, therefore the object of research examined by the researcher is about the time movie in which English is the source language and Indonesian is the target language. And also the researcher tries to find the equivalent achieved in each translation provided in order to facilitate better understanding and proper translation. In this study, the analysis was carried out using qualitative methods. In research, there are several ways the researcher did in collecting data. The first is watching a movie that is the object of research that provides Indonesian subtitles and provides an English script, then records every data collected and analyzed based on the theory from Catford. Furthermore, it also analyzes the principle of equivalent meaning in translation. In this study the researcher found that the forms of unit shift are clause, phrase, words and in class shifts there are verb, noun, adjectives and adverbs. Based on the findings on equivalent translation according to Nida (1974) categorized in two types, first equivalent meaning and non-equivalnt, which are related to the principles of film translation and in this study found more equivalent meaning in subtitle translation. On the other hand, in each data it is concluded that the types of unit shift and class shift used by translators vary and are still acceptable because of the consideration to achieve an equivalent meaning for the target language audience.
