Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the tenth grade the students’ ability in reading descriptive text at SMA Dian Andalas Padang. This research was designed by quantitative method. The population of this research was the tenth grade students of SMA Dian Andalas. The total number of population numbers was 21 students. The researcher used total sampling technique to select the sample. To collect the data, the research used objective test. The research asked the students to answer the question of descriptive text test which consisted of 20 questions. In analyzing the data, the research did following steps. First, the researcher applied descriptive method to see the mean score of the students reading comprehension. Then, the research calculated the correct answers. The correct answer was 5 and the incorrect answer 0. Then he classified the scores into very good, good, average, poor, and very poor based on the criterion. Based on the result of data analysis, it was concluded that 21 students of the tenth grade students of SMA Dian Andalas Padang had high ability in answering the reading comprehension test. In specific, two students could answer all 20 question items with the test score of 100. Hence, the descriptive text is a process of understanding the text, namely to take the ideas, the information, and then interpret the meaning. Based on the research result and the conclusion, it is known that students’ comprehension in reading descriptive text is categorized into high level and factors that influences students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text are complexity of the text, environmental conditions, anxietyduring reading comprehension, interest and motivation and decoding or word recognition speed.
