An Analysis of the Third-Year Students’ Ability in Listening to Long Talks in TOEFL Test at the English Department of Bung Hatta University Advisor: Dr. Joni Alfino English proficiency is needed in the globalization era. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is one of the measurements of English Proficiency. Nowadays, TOEFL is used on many occasions such as continuing study at university and getting scholarships. TOEFL is the requirement for knowing someone English proficiency. The purpose of this research was to describe the students ability in listening to long talks in TOEFL test. Descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The population of this research was the third year students of the English Department at Bung Hatta University. The researcher used total sampling technique to select the sample, and the number of sample was 30 students. Instrument for collecting the data in this research was a listening test that consisted of 20 questions adopted from the TOEFL preparation book by Deborah Phillips, copyrighted by Longman. To fulfill the validity of the test, the researcher constructs the test based on the syllabus when they studied in listening class. To make the test reliable the researcher used the split half method. The researcher used Microsoft Excel 2016 to analyze the data. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that half of third year students’ listening ability in comprehending Long Talks in TOEFL Test was low ability. The result in this study indicated that the third year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University especially in comprehending the main idea and the detail of Long Talk in TOEFL Test was had low. Moreover, the students still need learn about the technic of listening and still need more practice, and the researcher also give the suggestion to the students to take the class of TOEFL to increase their ability in listening.
