Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the third year students’ speaking ability in giving opinion towards teaching-learning process at English Department of Bung Hatta University. There are 5 aspects that needed to be described, they are content, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and grammar. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research is the third year students’ at English Department of Bung Hatta University. Total sampling was used on this research and the number of samples was 29 students. The instrument for collecting the data in this research was speaking test. The researcher used teaching-learning process to be the topic for the speaking test. The researcher also used inter-rater technique to know the reliability of the test. The reliability coefficient of the test is 0.92 and it means it has very high correlation. The result of this research showed that the third year students’ speaking ability in giving opinion towards teaching-learning process at English Department of Bung Hatta University was very high. It was proved that 51,724 % of students had very high ability in speaking ability in giving opinion towards teaching-learning process at English Department of Bung Hatta University. In detail, the students’ ability in speaking ability seen from content was very good. It was proved that 44,83 % of students had very good ability in delivering content. The students’ ability in speaking seen from vocabulary was very good. It was proved that 93,10 % of students had very good ability in using vocabulary. The students’ ability in speaking seen from grammar was bad. It was proved that 41,38 % of students had bad ability in using grammar. The students’ ability in pronunciation was very good. It was proved that 89,65% of students had very good ability in pronunciation. The students’ ability in fluency was very good. It was proved that 68,9% of students had very good ability in fluency. Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that the third year students’ speaking ability in giving opinion towards teaching-learning process at English Department of Bung Hatta University was very good. The researcher suggests that the teachers have to work harder in teaching students, especially in grammar. For the students, the researcher suggest them to learn more about grammar and do more practice to improve their ability. For the next researchers, the researcher suggests that they investigate students’ problem in grammar of giving opinion.
