Abstract

Directives are a type of speech act used by speakers to convince someone else to take a specific action. This action conveys the speaker's goals or intentions. Commanding, ordering, requesting, prohibiting, and suggesting are types of directive speech acts. When a speaker gives a direction, they are trying to get the audience to act in a way that supports what they are saying. The study found that strategies are often used to achieve their communication goals. The writer uses a historical mystery movie as the source of data, the movie is called Enola Holmes 2 which was released in 2022, and directed by Harry Bradbeer. There are two research questions analyze in this research. They are analyzing the categories of directive speech act in Enola Holmes 2, and analyzing the strategies of directive speech acts used in Enola Holmes 2. To analyze them, the writer uses theory from (Searle, 1979) about the type of directive speech act and (Cutting & Fordyce, 2020) about the speech act strategies. This research used qualitative research using the observation method. Based on the findings in this research, the writer found 70 directive speech acts.
