Abstract

This research aims to describe the types of expressions of sadness and explain how the comments express sadness emotion in Instagram comments on the account “@eye.on.palestine” that discuss Palestine news. Sadness is the most strongly experienced emotion followed by joy, anger, fear, humiliation, shame, and guilt. In the research, the writer analyzes types of sadness expressions and explains how the way followers convey the sadness emotion. The writer used a descriptive qualitative method. The writer presented the data in a descriptive paragraph. The data of this research were taken from the comments on the Instagram account @eye.on.palastine which consists of one video on June 12, 2024. The results of this study show that there are many expressions of sadness with the type of sympathy in the data and the writers found three ways commenters express their sadness, namely by using literal meaning in terms of vocabulary use, non-literal meaning such as by using figurative language such as metaphor, personification, and hyperbole. The writer found 58 types of comments with basic emotions, suffering 6 data, including 2 data anguish, and 4 data agony. Furthermore, the types of basic emotions of sadness, namely 35 data sympathy,14 data sadness,6 data suffering,1 data disappointment,1 data shame,1 data neglect, and 1 data pity. From 58 data found all data there are ways to express sadness, namely with vocabulary use with 33 data, non-verbal communication 36 data, figurative languages 22 data, from figurative language data found 3 metaphors, 9 personifications, and 9 hyperbole.
