Abstract

Delfiana, Fiola (2021) : An Analysis of the Second Year Students’ Problems In Speaking For Argument at the English Department of Bung Hatta University Advisor: Drs. Khairul Harha, M.Sc The purpose of this research was to describe the problem faced by the second year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University in speaking for argument. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this study was the second year students who registered in the academic year of 2019/2020. The researcher used a total sampling technique. The number of the sample as respondents in this research was 37 students. The instrument used to get the data was a speaking test. By using inter-rater technique, the researcher found the reliability index of the test was .89 (see appendix 4). It means that the result of the test was reliable, and it was valid in terms of content validity. The result of the data analysis showed that students had no problems in speaking for argument because there were only 18 of 37 students (48,6%) who had problems in speaking for argument, it means more than 50% had no problems in speaking for argument. It also demonstrated that only 1 student (2,70%) had problem with content, 17 students (45,9%) had problem with grammar, no student had problem with vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency. Based on the result of the data above, it can be concluded that in general most second year students of the English Department of Bung Hatta University had no problem in speaking for argument. However, almost half of students had problems with grammar when speaking for argument. Relating to this, they are suggested to study hard and practice more and do more exercises on grammar. Besides, the English teachers are suggested to consider and use the more effective strategies in the learning process. Keyword: problem, speaking, argument, speaking for argument
