Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the third year students’ ability in answering synonymous word questions in reading comprehension of the TOEFL Like test at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was the descriptive research. The population of this research was the third year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. Total sampling technique was used on this research and the number of samples was 35 students. Instrument for collecting the data in this research was reading comprehension of TOEFL test that was copied from several books of TOEFL test written by ETS. To make the test reliable, the researcher used split-half technique. The reliability index of the test was 0.70 (high correlation). It means that the test was reliable. Then, the test was valid in terms of content because it had covered all materials that students had learnt. Generally, the result of this research showed that the third year students had low ability in answering synonymous word questions in reading comprehension of the TOEFL Like test. It was proved that 0 (0%) student had very good ability, 2 (5.17%) students had good ability, 5 (14.29%) students had moderate ability, and 28 (80%) students had low ability in answering synonymous word questions in reading comprehension of the TOEFL Like test. Specifically, 6 (17.14) % students had very good ability, 0 (0%) student had good ability, 11 (31.43%) students had moderate ability, and 18 (51.43%) students had low ability in answering the noun form. While in answering synonymous word question in the form of verb, 5 (14.29%) students had very good ability, 0 (0%) student had good ability, 13 (37.14%) students had moderate ability, and 17 (48.57%) students had low ability. Next, the third year students’ ability in answering the adjective form was that, 10 (28.57%) students had very good ability, 0 (0%) student had good ability, 9 (25.71%) students had moderate ability, and 16 (45.72%) had low ability. Last, in answering synonymous word questions in the form of adverb, 0 (0%) student had very good ability, 0 (0%) had good ability, 3 (8.57%) students had moderate ability, and 32 (91.43%) had low ability. By having known that the students had low ability in answering synonymous word questions, the researcher gave suggestions to the lecturers, students, and the future researchers. The lecturers are suggested to give more explanation about synonymous word questions, and give the students more examples to practice. The students are suggested to join the Essay Reading class seriously, pay attention to the lecturer’s explanation, and do more exercise to answer those types of questions. Last but not least, the future researchers are suggested to conduct the related study to overcome the students’ problems in any section of TOEFL Like test. It is suggested to the further researchers to find out the cause of students’ low ability in answering TOEFL Like test.
