Abstract

This research aimed to describe the intensity of using Instagram for learning writing in Informal Setting for DKV majoring eleventh Grade students' at SMKN 4 Padang. The descriptive method was used as the design of this research. The population of this research was students of grade XI Design Communication Visual who registered in the academic year 2022/2023. The researcher used a cluster random sampling technique, and the sample was 52 students. The instrument for collecting the data in this research was a questionnaire. To analyze the reliability of the questionnaire, the researcher used the Alpha Formula by using SPSS version 24. The result of the analysis showed that the questionnaire was very highly reliable. It was supported by the fact that the coefficient correlation was 0.87. Then the test was valid in terms of content because it was determined by expert judgment. The result of this research showed that the eleventh-grade students at SMKN 4 Padang had sometimes intensity to use Instagram for learning writing in informal settings. The data indicated that 38 students (73.1%) had sometimes intensity to use Instagram for learning writing in informal setting. In detail, 8 students (15.4%) were categorized as often used and 6 students (11.4%) were classified as rarely used. In organizing ideas, 23.07% of students were categorized as often used, 63.4% of students were categorized as sometimes used, and 11.53% of students were categorized as rarely used. In using vocabulary, 19.23% of students were categorized as often used, 69.23% of students were categorized as sometimes used, and 11.53% of students were categorized as rarely used. In using grammar, 13.4% of students were categorized as often used, 38 students' 73.1% were categorized as sometimes used, and 13.4% of students' were categorized as rarely used. And the last is using mechanics, 23% of students are categorized as often used, 52% of students were categorized as sometimes used, and 25% were categorized as rarely used. Based on the findings, it could be concluded that the intensity of using Instagram for learning writing in informal setting were categorized into sometimes scale. By having known the intensity of using Instagram for learning writing in informal setting for majoring DKV eleventh-grade students at SMKN 4 Padang, the researcher gives suggestions to teachers, students, and future researchers. The English teachers are expected to revisit the importance of integrating technology tools and digital resources in teaching practice, especially the use of social media Instagram. The results can also guide curriculum design to supplement textbook material by integrating technology-based informal learning strategies. The future researcher should explore more impact of social media on specific English skills and how to minimize potential challenges that arise from using Instagram for learning writing in informal settings. For students who are users of social media, it is more considerate and wise to use social media not only for their pleasure but also for learning.
