This study examines the types of directive speech acts and strategies delivered by the characters in John Wick: Chapter 4 the movie. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the types of directive speech acts found in the movie dialogue, as well as how speech acts strategies employed through the conversation between characters. The writer employs Searle's (1979) theory for analyzing the types of directive speech acts, while Cutting and Fordyce's (2021) theory for the strategies. This study is engaged with qualitative descriptive approach. The data were gathered using an observational method resulting from the movie John Wick: Chapter 4 which serves as an audio-visual data type based on the dialogues. The writer finds a total of 95 data of directive speech acts, with 26 data come under category of directive speech acts in terms of commanding, 8 data of ordering, 18 data of requesting, 34 data of suggesting, 2 data of inviting, and 8 data forbidding. On the other hand, for the speech acts strategies, there are 67 data of direct strategies based on the whole data in total serving as the most dominant strategy category, while 28 data for indirect. For the speech acts strategies, the writer only focuses on 10 data, with 5 data come under category of direct strategy, and also 5 data under category of indirect. The suggesting type of directive acts serves as the most dominant category, while the type of inviting serves as the fewest. Based on the research findings, the writer found that the use of directive speech acts and strategies depicts the important role of speech acts as to make the communications become effective and communicative. The results of this study contribute to the field of pragmatics study, by providing insight into the application of speech act theory in a cinematic context.
