Abstract

This study analyzes the use of metaphorical expressions in the lyrics of Pink Sweat$'s albums Pink Planet (2021) and Volume 2 (2019). The objective of this research is to identify and classify the types of metaphors used in the lyrics and to analyze their meanings based on Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) Conceptual Metaphor Theory. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected from 22 song lyrics, identifying 50 metaphorical expressions, categorized into 14 Structural Metaphors, 9 Orientational Metaphors, and 27 Ontological Metaphors. The findings reveal that Ontological Metaphors were the most dominant, as they personify emotions to create deeper listener connections by making abstract feelings tangible and relatable. These metaphors frequently portray emotions, relationships, and identity as physical objects or forces, helping to convey complex sentiments more vividly. Structural Metaphors, which were the second most frequent, map complex emotions onto concrete experiences, allowing listeners to understand abstract concepts through familiar and tangible imagery. For instance, metaphors involving natural elements such as waves or rubber serve to illustrate resilience and emotional endurance. Orientational Metaphors, though the least common, still play a crucial role by expressing emotional intensity through spatial contrasts, such as high and low, reinforcing conventional perceptions of positive and negative emotional states. These metaphorical expressions enhance the poetic depth and emotional engagement of Pink Sweat$’s lyrics, making them more immersive and resonant for listeners. The study highlights the significant role of metaphor in contemporary songwriting, illustrating how linguistic creativity contributes to the expressive power of music. By employing various types of metaphors, Pink Sweat$ effectively transforms abstract emotions into vivid lyrical expressions, deepening the listener’s emotional and cognitive engagement with his music.
