Abstract

This research was intended to find out the third year students’ problems in writing narative essay at English Education Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive. The population of this research was the third year students of English Department and the number of population was 24 students. The researcher used total sampling technique in taking the sample because the size of population was small.The instrument of this research was writing test, and its correlation and coeficient was 0.99. The result of this study showed the students had problems in writing orientation, complication, resolution and also in using vocabulary, using grammar and in applying mechanics. In specific, the researcher found 12 of 24(50%) students had problems in writing orientation, the lowest percentage of students who had problems in writing complication was6 of 24(25%). 11of 24(45,8%) students had problems in writing resolution, There were 9 of 24 (37.5%) students had problems in choosing vocabulary, the researcher found the highest percentage of students who had problems in using grammar 20 of 24 (83.3%)students.19 of 24 (79.2%) students had problems in applying mechanics. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded the students had problems in writing orientation, complication, resolution and also in choosing vocabulary, using grammar and in applying mechanics. The lecturers are suggested to explain more about narative essayin order to minimize the students who had problems.The students are suggested to study harder and learn more about orientation, complication and resolution of narative essay, and improve their knowledge about vocabulary, grammar and mechanics.
