Abstract

Cohesion is part of system language. cohesion is related to how topics are introduced, developed, and maintained-monologically, or in collaboration; on paper; on screen; telephonically; or in the company of others. There are two main types of cohesion: grammatical cohesion: based on structural content and lexical cohesion: based on lexical content and background knowledge. In this study, the writer focus on the uses one of a part grammatical cohesion, it is reference. The term reference refers to specific items within a text/discourse. There are two problem that writer wants to expose, there are the types of reference and the dominant type of reference that appear in Edgar Allan Poe’s short story. The source of the data the writer chose short story from Edgar Allan Poe to find the reference type. The writer used theory that cited by Haliday & Hasan (1976). The method to analyze the data the writer used descriptive qualitative method that explained by Maneen. The result of the research there are 3 types of reference that the writer found in the source of the data, there are personal reference, demonstrative reference, and comparative reference. the most dominance reference type is personal reference which appears 29 times in the source of the data. According to the research that already been done the writer can find that the classification of grammatical cohesion form especially in reference type. All of the data are explaining about reference but each type of reference different because of the way it is use the user or the reference Keyword: Cohesion, Types of Reference, Haliday & Hasan, Edgar Allan Poe.
