Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the students’ ability in doing presentation. This research was conducted by using descriptive method. The population of the research was the second year students of English Department of Bung Hatta University who were registered in public speaking class in academic year 2018/2019. The sample was taken by applying total sampling technique because the number of population is less than 100. The number of sample was 23 students. To collect the data, the researcher gave alternative topics to do presentation. The researcher gave 1-4 minutes for students to do the presentation. The researcher used the smartphone to record videos of the students in doing presentation. The test was reliable in which it has high correlation index (0,73) between to scorers. The evaluation of the presentation is based on the five components of speaking such as content, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. In analyzing data, the researcher wrote video transcriptions of presentation, counted the students’ average score to get the raw score for each sample, found the converted score, classified the students who got very high to very low ability, and counted the percentage of them. Based on the result of the data analysis, the ability the second year students at English Department of Bung Hatta University in general was very high. It can be proved by there were 86.96% (20 students) had very high ability, 13.04% (3 students) had high ability in doing presentation. There were 8.70% (2 students) had very high ability, 39.13% (9 students) had high ability, 21.74% (5 students) had moderate ability, 13.04% (3 students) had low ability, 17.39% (4 students) had very low ability in expressing content. There were 34.78% (8 students) had high ability, 30.43% (7 students) had moderate ability, 21.74% (5 students) had low ability, and 13.04% (3 students) had very low ability in using grammar. 100% students had very high ability in using vocabulary, 100% students had very high ability in pronunciation, and 100% students as having very high ability in fluency. Although the students as had high ability of five components of speaking, but some students still have problem when they presented their presentation in front of the class. Based on the finding that students’ speaking ability in doing presentation was very high. The researcher gave suggestion for the lecturer and the students. Since the result of the students ability in doing presentation was very high, the lecturer is suggested to give projects that are more challenging for their students in doing presentation to make them always maintain their ability. The students are suggested to keep practice in doing presentation with their friends everyday to maintain and improve their ability
