Abstract

This paper presents a strategy to control the speed and torque of Brushless Direct Current Motor (BLDCM) with performance like a conventional direct current motor. The strategy is based on the torque vs. speed curve, which is divided into two regions as constant torque region and flux weakening region. The aim is to obtain the motor operating similar to a speed and torque setting. The 3 phase’s motor model is transformed into the rotor reference frame (field oriented control), then the current and voltage formulations are derived by q axis and d axis (dq axis). The rotor angle is maintained 900 at the constant torque region and it will turn the d axis current to be zero (id = 0), therefore the motor toque or speed can be controlled through the q axis current (iq ). The set data of BLDCM is used to simulate this model by MATLAB Simulink version 7. The PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) controller is proposed to improve the model transient responses. The simulation results show that it is relatively success to control the BLDCM speed and torque transient responses.
