Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the second-year students’ ability in writing compound sentences with coordinating conjunctions through google classroom at the English Language Study Program of Bung Hatta University. The descriptive method is used as the design of this research. The population of this research was the second-year students at the English Language Study Program of Bung Hatta University who registered in the academic year 2020/2021. The researcher used the total sampling technique to select the sample, and the number of samples are 33 students. The instrument for collecting the data was a writing test. To make the test reliable the researcher used the inter-rater technique and it was shown that the test was very high reliable (0.99). Based on the data analysis, it was found that 11 students (33.30%) had very high in writing compound sentences with the coordinating conjunction. Specifically, 14 students (42.42%) who had very high ability in writing compound sentences with the coordinating conjunction using for. Then 13 students (39.39%) were classified into high in writing compound sentences with the coordinating conjunction using and. Furthermore, there were 15 students (45.45%) had very high in writing compound sentences with the coordinating conjunction using but. Besides, 14 students (42.42%) were classified as low writing compound sentences with the coordinating conjunction using or. Lastly, 12 students (36.36%) were classified very high in writing compound sentences with the coordinating conjunction using so. This research concludes that the second-year students had high writing ability in writing compound sentences with the coordinating conjunction after learning through Google classroom. Based on the findings, the lecturers are suggested to motivate students to maintain students’ ability in writing compound sentences. For the students, they are suggested to maintain their writing ability in and do more exercises in other forms. And for the future researchers, the researcher suggests to find out the students’ writing ability in writing compound sentences with the coordinating conjunction with different tenses.
