Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the second year students errors in transforming active voice into passive voice of simple past tense at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The design of this research is descriptive. The population of this research was the second year students at the English Department of Bung Hatta University. The research used total sampling technique in this research. The number of sample is 30 students. Instrument for collecting the data in this research is writing test. To make the test reliable the researcher used inter-rater technique. It was found that the reliability index of the test was 0.99 (very high correlation), it means that the test is reliable. The writing test is valid in terms of content because it had covered all materials that students had learnt. The result of this test showed that there are 1134.5 errors made by students. It can be classified from the highest to the lowest: misformation 539.5 errors (47.55%) errors, misordering 304 (26.80%) errors, omission 266 (23.45%) errors, and addition 25 (2.20%) errors. The researcher would like to give suggestions to the lecturers, students, the future researcher. The lecturers are suggested to give more attention to the students and know the causes of errors to minimize the students errors in writing. The students are suggested to learn and practice more in writing passive voice, especially passive voice of simple past tense. Furthermore, they should understand about errors in writing, so they can be aware about making errors especially errors in misformation. The future researchers are suggested to find out what are the solutions from the lecturers and the students to minimize the students errors in writing.
